Dental Hygiene

Taking care of your teeth is just as important to your health as caring for other parts of your body. In addition to seeing your dentist for routine checkups and to address any unusual symptoms, aim to brush and floss your teeth well and regularly.

How often should I brush my teeth?

Tooth-brushing is an important aspect of oral hygiene. Aim to brush twice each day, using a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush with a comfortable fit for your mouth. For added benefits, consider using an electric toothbrush, which better minimizes plaque and gingivitis, a common form of gum disease, compared to manual brushing.

When should I replace my toothbrush?

Make sure you aren’t using an old toothbrush because heavily used bristles won’t clean your teeth as effectively. Aim to replace your disposable toothbrush or the head on your electric toothbrush every three to four months. If the bristles look frayed, replace it sooner.

How important is flossing?

Flossing plays a hugely important role in dental hygiene. The string allows you to reach and clean tiny, tight spaces between your teeth and beneath your gum-line, which toothbrushes can’t typically reach.

How can I floss well?

Flossing well takes more than zipping the string in and out quickly between your teeth. To floss effectively, break off a piece of dental floss, about 18 inches long, winding most of it around your middle finger on one hand. Wind the rest around your other middle finger.

Gripping the floss tightly between your forefingers and thumbs, guide it between your teeth with a rubbing motion. When it reaches your gum line, curve it against the tooth and slide it back up. Continue this process throughout your mouth, unwinding fresh floss as you go. If you can’t seem to get into the habit of flossing, consider using a dental pick, tiny flossing brushes, or pre-threaded flossers.

Is mouthwash helpful?

Mouthwash can be a helpful addition to oral hygiene care for some people ages six and up, but it should not replace brushing or flossing. Cosmetic mouthwash can temporarily control bad breath. Therapeutic mouthwashes have ingredients, such as fluoride, that fight plaque and tooth decay.

How often should I see the dentist?

Routine dental visits are a key part of oral hygiene, both to receive professional cleanings and to make sure any issues are caught and addressed early. Having check ups twice a year works well for many people. If you have a dental disease or are at high risk for one, you may benefit from a checkup every three to four months.
